You are asked to write a short critical response essay

You are asked to write a short critical response essay (750 to 1000 words) to the article that follows. You are expected to examine the arguments put forward in the article and decide whether they are strong or weak.

Your own opinion on the topic is irrelevant. You will make your decision on the strength or weakness of the argument based on the readings in the Study Guide/Reader on what makes a good argument and any extra information you can bring to the topic through your own research.

It is important to research the topic to see if there are any new developments in the topic area that would be relevant for your essay and to consider the article in a larger context; however, your primary focus must be the article itself.

You will have practised this analysis in your workshops. Imagine that your reader has not read the article. In your first paragraph you will write about the article’s origin: who wrote it, where it was published, who it was written for, and the argument being proposed.

You must then state whether you think the article presents an overall good argument or is one with too many flaws. For a short essay you could continue your discussion by making three points to support your claim.

Make sure to back up your claim for a good or poor argument point with evidence from the article or from elsewhere. Please note that it is likely the article you will analyse will be from a newspaper or journal, formats that might not use academic style referencing.

Remember to critique the argument, not the writer as a person and to avoid giving your personal view of the subject matter. We want your opinion on the argument put forward by the writer. We do not want your
