This Paper is about the Who, What, When and Why of Liberty in the New World. The continents of North and South America, as well as the islands of the caribbean, produced an increase in luxury and liberty for some, side by side with an increase in captivity and servitude for others. Your central tasks in this essay are 1) to identify what either Sansay or Melville sees as the greatest (what is in the way of freedom, what’s blocking freedom) obstacle to freedom in the New World and 2) to show whether Sansay or Melville adopts, rejects, or shifts the way that primary sources discuss the same issue of freedom.

To succeed in this essay, students will need to locate at least one primary source from the years 1690-1865 that directly addresses liberty or tyranny. You will also need to determine how Sansay or Melville enhances, opposes, or transforms the way the primary source depicts tyranny or liberty. You can begin with the literature or the source; either direction works.

Papers should be from four to six double-spaced pages—that’s 1250-2100 words. I will check the word count. The font should be 12pt and the margins one-inch on each side. The paper should have your own, original title. Use the “insert page numbers” function to number your pages.
It might be beneficial to think of this paper as one that is about how readers are made to feel about characters and events. It will not be enough to say that events happen, you must explain how the details in the description (or lack of details) influence readers’ feelings about characters and events.

Students must give credit to all sources they have consulted, using either MLA or Chicago style for all references. Both have online resources so that you can check your formatting.

To avoid a paper that simply summarizes the plot or chats about characters, make the author the grammatical subject of your thesis and your topic sentences.
To help show your research, be sure that each paragraph quotes directly from a) a primary source, b) a secondary source, or c) the literature.
To ensure that you stand out as a brilliant interpreter and guide, try to follow every quotation with an explanation of its relevance to your thesis.
The likelihood that you will write a B-paper at the last minute, the night before the paper is due is very low. Here is an alternate process I would recommend. Consider beginning a “zero draft” to get all of your ideas out. Write what you think you want to talk about without stopping. At the end of that process (or even the next day) try to write a sentence summarizing what you learned by writing. What do you think you will argue in this paper? Then take notes on what you need to fill in the blanks. Are there research questions you need to answer? Passages from the literature you need to quote? Find them, collect them, and write them into a first draft of the paper. Finally, on another day, I would then rearrange the paper so that it is a unified piece of writing with a logical progression from one paragraph to the next and evidence and reasoning supporting its interpretations. This process will probably take two to three days, at minimum. You need not follow this exact plan, but I think this plan (or something like it) would benefit you in terms of getting started, lessening stress, spreading out the work, and offering a chance to turn in more polished work.
