I can’t help but think what an impact nursing can have in this years election cycle. The text discusses how nurses hold 2.4 million full time nursing positions, with more needed by the year of 2014. As someone who tends to sit on the right side of the political isle I can’t help be frustrated and disappointed at how healthcare has changed in the past few years. I personally see healthcare as a business with all the recent mergers and layoffs. Like a corporate institution these layoffs are occurring to make money. In Massachusetts we have seen the creation of for profit healthcare systems whose bottom line is to make money. I think that we can demand with our votes some of the values that we hold dear. As nurses we all made a decision to enter a profession whose bottom line is to help others. We each have personal ideas and mores on how to accomplish this. I know that I will make my voice heard at the ballot box for candidates who espouse similar values on the purpose of healthcare. We can shape a preferred future for nurses. As someone who has experienced mergers in two different hospitals I can understand the importance of followers when dealing with change. Without followers there are no leaders and no change.
