-The Article of the Refugee Convention is Article 23: Public Relief
-The Refugee Home Country is Syria
-The Offending Host Country is the United Kingdom

The general topic of the paper is the answer to this question: In what way – and importantly, why – has the host country (United Kingdom) violated the 1951 Convention Related to the Status of Refugees’s Article 23 (Public Relief) against a person, persons (several individuals), or group of people (ethnic group, religious group, etc) from the selected refugee home country (Syria)?

The essay should be 10 – 12 pages long double-spaced, Times New Roman font size 12, with 1 inch margins. Use subtitles. Always cite other peoples’ ideas, even when you paraphrase them. Do not use casual language (e.g., contractions), prose, cute metaphors, or generalities. Do not use long quotes. An additional page at the end of your paper should contain your works cited (bibliography). A good bibliography should have at least 3 academic sources (e.g., peer reviewed book or article, case law, etc), none of which should be Wikipedia. Helpful sources for this paper may include reports from Amnesty international or Human Rights Watch, articles from Human Rights Quarterly, and articles from various law journals. Citations should be in APSA format.

In answering this question, you will want to structure the substance paper as follows:
The introduction paragraph should be 1 page maximum and a substance selection would be: “In this paper, I will discuss how and why [host country] has violated the [name and number of Article] of the 1951 Convention Related to the Status of Refugees against [person, persons, group from home country]. The case study I will discuss is [finish sentence]. I argue that [host country] has committed this violation because [reason/s]. I first define the terms used in this paper as they are defined in international law. I then explain my case study. Next, I present my argument regarding why the [host country] has [allowed/perpetuated/etc] this violation. Finally, I present [international and/or domestic] policy recommendations that will assist in [alleviating / resolving] the situation.”

The second page should be for Preliminary clarifications, this is where you should explain the chosen Refugee Convention’s Article and what terms mean as per international law (Do not explain what terms mean according to the dictionary. In political science and international relations, among other disciplines, the explanation of terms is constructed by using sources within the discipline. For example, in this class, we will use sources such as international law and scholarly articles to construct definitions)

The third and fourth pages should talk about the case chosen and explanation of the violation, Explain the situation where there was a violation (who, what, where, when) against the refugee by the host country (by a public entity, not by a private individual)
AND Explain how this situation was a violation against the Refugee Convention’s Article.

The following 4-5 pages should state an Explanation of why violation occurred, How / why did this happen in the host country? Is this related to a country’s law? Or lack of enforcement of a domestic or international law? The thesis statement should contain a claim and a rationale(s) (I believe [situation] occurred because…)

Finally the last 2 pages should talk about a conclusion and policy recommendations, explain what international or domestic policy/policies would have to change or be enforced in order to ensure that this does not happen again.
