Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)

Urinary Tract Infection also known as UTI is an infection that is contracted within the urinary tract.  These infections can cause by small organisms that are too small to see without looking under a microscope. Bacteria can get into the urinary tract from both the skin around the area of the rectum or genitals and the bloodstream throughout other parts of the body. This bacterial infection can be found in these certain part of the body, the kidneys (pyelonephritis – Pyelonephritis is caused by a bacterium or virus infecting the kidneys. The bacterium Escherichia coli is often the cause.), the urethra (Urethritis, is inflammation (swelling and irritation) of the urethra. The urethra is the tube that carries urine from the body.) and finally, the bladder (cystitis, acute cystitis is an infection of the bladder or lower urinary tract. Acute means that the infection begins suddenly.) When having a UTI infections, you make experience symptoms such as, fever, pain and discomfort during urination, the need to use the bathroom more often, vomiting and cloudy or bloody urine. UTI are usually treated with antibiotics and may take up from 7-10 days of treatment time. Many risk factors are involved when it comes to UTIs. In general, impedance or any interruption of the usual flow of urine can be a risk factor for it. For example, urethral strictures, an enlarged prostate, kidney stones, or any anatomical abnormalities in the urinary tract increases infection risk. The reason why I chose this topic because I will admit and not be ashamed of it, but I have contracted a UTI before and the experience of it was one that I would never wish upon anyone. I was able to overcome this infection with antibiotics prescribed by my doctor and changing my eat habits and dieting correctly.

For my initial discussion post I chose to do research on a lung disease called COPD, which stands for Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. COPD is a lung disease that is chronic which causes difficulty breathing. (Learn About COPD) This disease is extremely common. Believe it or not it is the 3rd leading cause of death in the United states. (Learn About COPD) I was shocked to discover this. Prior to my research I knew a little about the disease but I had no idea that it affected millions of Americans. Some of the effects of COPD on a person’s lungs are: inflamed and thick airways, lung tissue destruction, and lose of elasticity in air sacs and airways. There are a few causes of Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, however, smoking is a main cause. Other causes of COPD include one’s environment, as well as deficiency of a protein called Alpha-1. (Learn About COPD) Sadly, COPD is often hard to identify until late stages. Some symptoms of this deadly lung disease include: Shortness of breath, Chronic cough, Reoccurring respiratory infections, Fatigue, Wheezing, Mucus production, and Blueness of lips or finger nails. () Because of this extreme mucus production, airway blockage is common and extremely dangerous. The good news is that if caught early COPD can be treated. So risk factors of Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease are: Air pollution, secondhand smoke, exposure to chemicals and dust, and a history of childhood respiratory infection. (Learn About COPD) Prevention is simple, do not smoke! Also protect yourself from breathing in harmful chemicals and dust.
