Interpret the meaning of each work by analyzing how the plot (the telling of events as presented to the audience) relates to the story, AND how the plot relates to the meaning. In each case, the plot tells a story that is not quite like the story the plot derives from; in fact, in each case the plot concerns a quest for finding out what the story is. For instance, Oedipus can be described as a kind of detective story in which the brilliant detective unknowingly (depending on one’s interpretation) is seeking himself as the culprit. In the case of Memento, the plot unfolds in a highly unconventional way – interchangeably in two temporal directions, one forward (in black-and-white) and the other semi-backward (in color), and meeting in a kind of “middle,” which is presented at both the beginning and the end – and similarly involves someone acting like a detective but who is fundamentally confused about “what happened” because of his short-term memory impairment. You’ll have the textbook version of Oedipus to work from, but Memento is a trickier “text.” The screenplay is available online (I’ve posted one link in Resources, along with a link to the short story), but you’ll have to rely on notes you take while viewing. (I think it may also be available online from Payson.) (For all I know, there may be versions available in other formats, but because I wouldn’t know about either the legality or the legitimacy, I will not comment.) In both cases, I expect “direct textual reference,” but I understand that that may be more difficult in the case of the film. If we did have the screenplay and we each had a DVD, we could easily break down the film into particular episodes. I will supply a reference guide for Memento.Bear in mind that even though you’ll be referring at least to only three sources (the textbook material on plot, Sophocles’ Oedipus, and Nolan’s Memento), you’ll still need to use full and correct MLA citation and documentation procedures.
