This is a sociology of deviance and difference examination term paper . Interpreting questions and finding additional sources are part of this process. Exams must be typewritten. Answer TWO of the following questions: 1. Using the ideas of Pierre Bourdieu, discuss whether striving to be different is rebellious, conformist, or something else. 2. How can public debate over obesity be understood sociologically in terms of deviance and difference? 3. Evaluate the claim that mental illness can be understood solely in terms of individual pathology. In your answer consider whether the social has any influence upon the causes, experiences and treatment of those identified as mentally ill. 4. Using examples to support your argument, discuss the usefulness of the notion of hegemonic masculinity for understanding how and why homosexuality is constructed as a deviant sexuality. Essays must be fully referenced. Wherever ideas, words, or tables are taken from another source, a reference must be provided. The bibliography does not count towards the word limit. Essays must be typed and double spaced with generous margins. If a computer or typewriter is not available, the essay must be neatly printed. Unreadable essays will not be given a pass.
