The program I will be talking about is called Ink scape. Ink scape is an open source alternative to Adobe Illustrator. The term open source does not always mean that it is free software. It is software that has the ability to view and develop the source code.

Proprietary is software that only the creators can view and change. The benefit of using Ink scape is it allows me to add sub programs to it. Recently I built a CNC laser engraver from scratch.

Once the build was complete I needed a program to be able to draw up designs and convert those designs into G-code (G-code is the language CNCs). When I first was looking for software Adobe Illustrator was the first one I checked out, but I do not have an extra $200 for software.

I can not think of any drawbacks that Ink scape has. At first it was a little hard to figure out how to use, but that was fixed with a couple of YouTube videos.

The possible upside of purchasing Adobe Illustrator could be that there are more options to choose from when drawing, but I am not sure if it has the capability of using it for G-code, and I do not plan on spending the money to find out
