Consider the various meanings of literacy—thinking about what we know, of what it means to know what we know, and of how we know and use what we know. Our discussions will include an examination of literacy both as an idea in itself and in context with the focus of our course—the various natures of writing and rhetoric and their uses in constructing individual identity in a larger culture and/or society. We will consider these concepts, looking for ways in which literacies grow and develop over time and how people use writing both within individual lives and with regard to greater societal involvements. We will work to see how writing, communication, and literacy do not have one single, stable definition, nor are they immune to change and development once acquired. In addition, we will explore other skills, knowledges, and activities as they show and inform our notions of literacy.

THE PROJECT:

In this project, you’ll write about an experience of your own with a form of your own learning development—one of your many literacies. Think especially of writing and rhetorical experience (reading, writing, speaking, etc.,), though there may be some room for other literacies, too. You’ll take as a focus a way in which this experience helped you understand or develop a facet of your self or your identity. In the course of the essay, you’ll look to show in your writing how this experience changed you or developed your understanding of your self and your life, of how you view your self (or your written literacy) in a different manner before and after this experience, perhaps how your previous understandings of this learning and literacy may have differed from a later development in its progression. This project invites you to make some sense of yourself as a learner, writer, and literate thinker, but also as a changing self. You’ll write to make sense of a significant learning-related event(s) in your life and to consider how it might connect with how you use your literacy or literacies today, and how you see yourself as a participating member of a larger society.

As our readings will show, there are many ways to approach a learning memoir. A few suggestions might include:

Considering a single, important event which changed your understanding of yourself through a form of your literacy, language use, or writing, or other literacy/skill

Following a chronological pattern or series of discoveries about yourself

Discussing significant people in your life related to your learning, writing, or literacy history

Examining ways in which your particular learning, writing, and/or literacy form has changed—from home to college, from youth to adulthood, socially vs. professionally, etc.

Your relations with learning, writing, literacy, and language as compared to those of someone else whom you know—a parent, a friend, a co-worker, a child, etc.

Instructing or receiving instruction in writing, language use, or another literacy

These ideas may work alone or in combination; the choice is yours. Let self-discovery guide you as you invent and write. Regardless, the more specific you are the better and more effective your product is likely to be. Keep in mind, too, that this project is more than simple autobiography; tell your story, yes, but think of more than the narration of ‘what happened’ and expressing your feelings and thoughts at the time. You should also take steps towards an analysis of your story. That is, make an attempt to interpret the events you narrate for their significance and connection to your personal identity and growth, a greater understanding of your skills, and your applications thereof.,,,,,
