Which law amended the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act of 1986, and what did it change?
The National Information Infrastructure Protection Act of 1996 amended the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act of 1986. Many sections were affected by the amendment, one of them being penalties for certain crimes. Penalties were increased to include fines, up to 20 years in prison, or both of these. There were two aspects taken into consideration when determining how serious the penalty would be – the value of information that was obtained as well as the reason the crime was committed. The three reasons were either for the purpose of having a commercial advantage, for the purpose of any private financial gain, or in the advancement of a criminal act.
