After reading Ivan’s War and Strange Defeat, what were the similarities and differences between the Soviet and French war experience? Based on your reading, why was Soviet society able to stand the strain of war but French was not?

Some alternatives include: “It appears….”, “It seems…”, “This argument has much merit” (or, “This argument has little apparent merit”), “This argument is unconvincing, as it lacks persuasive supporting evidence.” In all such constructions, and many others too, the reader is left with the unmistakable understanding that you are stating your own opinion. If you must use a personal pronoun, use the third person rather than the first person: “One doubts whether an historian has any business making generalizations based on only a handful of cases,” rather than “I doubt that….”

b. Do not use contractions! Did not, rather than didn’t, cannot, rather than can’t, is not, rather than isn’t, etc…..

c. Proofread your paper for grammar and meaning before you turn it in! Better still, have a friend proofread it. He/she is likely to see errors that you may miss.

7. Beware the spell-checker; it will not catch words that are spelled correctly but used incorrectly, such as substituting from for form, or vice versa.

8. Neither of these books are fiction, so please do not refer to them as novels.
