This is the first paper you will write in this class. In Module 01 we discussed how to write in APA style and make use of the library database to support your work. You now have the opportunity to showcase these new skills in the work you produce. This is also a nice break from the statistical analyses we have been conducting in this module. The due date for this paper is Week 08. This due date weeks from now is intentional as it gives you time to produce a paper you are proud of and budget your time accordingly.

You will find it very difficult to write this paper to an appropriate standard if you start in Week 06. Please note that this will become your final paper, after peer then instructor revisions are incepted. The working prompt for this first paper is as follows: “Write an introduction to a topic of your choosing.”

You are not writing the literature review for a topic but rather the introduction that sets-up a hypothetical literature review to follow.The introduction should be in the style of an academic journal paper. By sets-up it means that the introduction suggests the main areas that will be covered in the upcoming literature review. The working prompt for this paper is intentionally very broad in scope to give you lots of opportunities to select a topic that is motivating to you. This is a recurrent theme throughout this course. In subsequent papers you, or your group, will decide the specific topic to which you will apply research methodologies. So, let’s define what is meant by topic here. Literally any topic associated with communication is appropriate for this paper. Due to communication being incorporated into most components of professional and working lives this provides an initially overwhelming amount of options to you. For example, thinking very broadly, you could write about the following domains, legal settings (e.g. communication in the opinions of judges in legal cases), marketing (e.g. brand logos), human resources (e.g. employee morale), or social media (e.g. how users communicate status) to name just a few options. To make your task more manageable you should focus on a specific topic within a domain.

The examples inside parentheses in the previous sentence are concrete examples of initial steps toward providing focus. For example, the area of human resources is too broad to write coherently about in this paper as there are simply too many facets of human resources to cover. However, focusing in on employee morale focuses your research topic and substantially reduces the amount of things relevant to your paper and so makes it a more appropriate and relevant topic for your introduction paper. You may also find it useful to provide even more focus. Here are three examples with even more focus: a) How do companies improve employee morale? b) The effect of social media use by companies on employee morale. c) What is the relationship between employee moral and company size? Note: in example a and example c the topic was posed as a question whereas in example b the focus was in a non-question form. For this paper either approach is fine.

The key thing with the introduction is that it should achieve the following three main goals: a) set-up the hypothetical literature review that would follow this introduction in a paper; b) let the reader know what the focus of the paper is (e.g. how does social media recruit users – to return to one of our previous examples); and c) justify to the reader why this topic is important and why the reader should care about this topic.

The introduction should:

1. Be at least three pages long.
2. Contain at least ten references

. 3. Should not have any text on the 5th page. In other words the final word the introduction should, at a maximum, be on the 4th page.

4. You should include a title page.
5. The title page and reference page do not count toward the page limit. 6.
6. An abstract is not needed.
7. Academic sources (e.g. journal articles) should be used when possible as sources.

After you make your formal submission of your paper your instructor will provide feedback. You then take this feedback and make edits to your paper and extend the paper to be a formal submission at the end of the course as your final paper.

Any topic you pick is fine for the final paper. Here are some general hints about writing a good introduction.

• Include lots of citations (it is likely you have too few rather than not enough).
• Typically, for any point you are making, there are multiple possible citations that could be used. One or two citations will be sufficient.
• Make sure to review and use information from the readings in previous weeks, especially Week 01 and Week 02. The templates at the end of the They say/ I say book are very useful.
• Remember you are writing an introduction in an academic research style, not a business report or a book chapter. The writing styles for these formats differ from what is required here (again, look at the introductions from current journal readings within your courses).
• Write in a concise style.
• Avoid ambiguity. Try to make sure there are not two possible meanings to what you have written. • Avoid superlatives (adjectives) that are difficult to support. If you are unfamiliar with what superlatives are, look them up on the web.
• Write literally – this is key to research writing.
• Do not plagiarize

Instructions For the Final Paper(Continuance of Introductory Paper)

You will develop further the Introductory Paper you submitted earlier this semester. This means you will keep the same topic as you had for the Introductory Paper. For the final paper complete the following two major steps: 1) Respond to instructor feedback. 2) Extend the paper.

Step 1: Respond to instructor feedback 1) Respond to and apply every edit your section instructor made in their feedback. a. Take care – mistakes made multiple times may only have been commented on once. Make sure to apply the highlighted correction throughout the paper. b. As a concrete example, perhaps you misused the &. It is likely your feedback did not highlight every repeat mistake. It is your responsibility to correct every misuse of the & there is in your paper. c. Do not use track changes (an option in Word) as you make your edits. 2) There may be a very small number (perhaps one or two) instances where you disagree with the feedback you received. It is therefore your responsibility to engage in respectful debate with your instructor to decide whether the feedback comment needs to be addressed. Instructors, like everyone, do make occasional mistakes in their feedback comments. Note though that the instructor has final say on whether a feedback comment is correct or not. 3) If any of the feedback is confusing to you make sure to request clarification on the feedback comments as soon as possible. a. After completing the edits to the paper in step 1 you should now have a very polished introduction that reflects some of your best writing. In a traditional research paper you would now extend the paper by writing a comprehensive literature review. In this literature review you would cover the major areas related to your research question/hypothesis and summarize the research relevant to your topic.

Make sure the heading ‘Literature Review’ is used to indicate where your introduction ends and where your literature review starts. As a concrete example suppose your research question was “How do the lyrics of rap music influence Millennials’ perceptions of money and sex”. Looking at this research question it is possible to identify the major areas relevant to understanding this question. These major areas are (in the order they appear in the question not necessarily importance): 1) lyrical content, 2) rap music, 3) Millennials, 4) perceptions of money, 5) perceptions of sex.

1) Write about one of the major areas from your research question.

1. You will not be able to cover everything in this major area due to page limits imposed by the time constraints of the course. Note, you do not gain extra points by going over the page limit and if you exceed the page limit by more than one page you will actually lose points. You are welcome to do more research and write more in your own time if you wish, and in the research practicum at the end of the program you can develop your ideas further with guidance from an instructor if you wish.
2. Review the journal articles which contained literature reviews (which were most of them) from the course, and the readings on literature review for more guidance.

Returning to our earlier example of “How do the lyrics of rap music influence Millennials’ perceptions of money and sex”. You might write for the assignment about rap music. You could then list: 3 · lyrical content · Millennials · perceptions of money · perceptions of sex

These could be the other four areas you would cover. You should not provide justification of why you selected these areas or excluded others. And simply listing the text in red in as simple format as shown here (i.e. bullet points and 2-5 words description) is sufficient.

Prior to submission we will not review your proposed bullet points. Part of the assignment is for you to determine appropriate additional areas that should be covered. A small number of you may find an article which ‘answers’ the research question you are posing. At this point you may panic. Stop and do not panic. Even if you find a research article with an identical research question as yours there are a number of reasons why your paper remains important.

1) When was the article, which you believe is the same as yours, published? Even if published this year the data was likely collected last year and for many topics things change a lot in the space of a year.

2) Where did the study take place and who were the participants? Were they undergraduate students (typical), perhaps you tweak your question slightly to be about older or younger people. Did the study take place on the east coast or somewhere else with a different culture from where you propose your study?

Rewrite of introductory paper. You may look back at your introductory paper and want to rewrite additional material beyond what your grader commented on. This is fine. You can edit and change your introductory paper as much as you wish. We discourage you from changing topic or completely rewriting the introduction.

Summary of the final paper:

• Revised intro based on instructor feedback (not to exceed four pages and minimum of three pages).
• Start of literature review on a single major area from your research question/hypothesis (not to exceed five pages and a minimum of four pages).
• Total of 7-9 pages. While it is possible to score a good grade with an eight page paper it is very hard to achieve as you are not making effective use of the space available. 4 Title page and references do not count toward page count. There should be nothing about the method (e.g. surveys) in this final paper.

How many citations should there be? It varies from paper to paper. More citations is generally better. For every claim/fact/opinion/statement there should be a citation. Refer back to the citation count activity earlier in the semester for an approximate guide.

I need to hand-in the Introductory Paper and the Final Paper (continuance of Introductory Paper) separately.

Therefore, I need to first hand in a 3-page Introductory paper that includes a separate bibliography page that only includes the sources used in the introduction. I can receive the research paper as a whole, but please have a separate bibliography page for the introduction only.

I would probably ask for revision if the professor comments on the introduction of the paper.
