 Part 2:

First read F.N. Babeuf, 96-97

He French socialist writing during the French Revolution, who felt that the ideals of the Revolution were not being respected, tried to explain how he felt the society should better live up to its ideals.

Then read Robert Owen, 98-101

Consider the language he uses.  How does it reflect the ideas of the Liberal Revolutions?

The “Communist Manifesto” is pp. 123-150 in The Communist Manifesto and other Revolutionary Writings.

**You can skip most of part three (from the middle of 142 all the way to the middle of 150, “The Communists turn their attention chiefly towards Germany…” There is some useful stuff in there about Robert Owen, but only read it if you are particularly interested.**

Keep in mind as you read:

1) What are the terms he uses, and what do they mean (especially Proletarians and Bourgeoisie)?

2) He gives a brief history lesson on 126-127.  Make sure you note the events he discusses, many of them should be familiar to you.

3) Why does he think the Bourgeoisie are revolutionary?

4) What sort of actions does he recommend for the Proletarians?  (hint: pp. 141-142)

5) Consider the CM in terms of Owen and Babeuf (Blaisdell readings 2), especially when you read part 3 (“Socialist and Communist Literature”).

6) Consider the whole thing in the terms of the liberal revolutions.

7) What does he think about the Factory Acts? (hint: p. 133)
