Finally, is there a better way to teach students at the college level, which would encourage a student’s success rather than foster discouragement and student failures?

Thesis College freshman are failing introductory courses due to the large class sizes, failure of teachers to use progressive teaching methods, and an antiquated weed-out mentality leading to low numbers of STEM graduates and a lower than necessary number of future STEM workers. Colleges need to decrease STEM class sizes and integrate active learning methodologies in STEM courses to increase student retention and success.
3. Prejudices and FeelingsThe research needs to be objective, since prior prejudices exist. When I began the research, I was angry, and after further research it makes me angrier to know there is a different way to teach and other schools have taken an active interest into employing different methods. At the same time, the research helps me understand I was a victim of a flawed “Teach as it has always been taught” system.

There is a better way. Change needs to be made, and unfortunately change is difficult, time-consuming, and costly. I feel this paper will help me as well as any others, who have encountered nearly impossible classes, to find peace in their failure. Research into a college’s teaching methods would be beneficial to all prospective STEM students.
