How are other schools handling issues of STEM student’s retention
You will choose one side of the argument and persuade your audience, based on facts and research, that your position is the correct one; nothing racist, bigoted or sexist will be acceptable. Please choose an interesting topic-not whether schools should mandate uniforms (yawn). The world is full of controversy: police brutality, equal pay, a living wage, climate change, wars, childhood hunger, ACA, and a presidential election!!For the proposal, after your MLA heading, please submit the following:

- Your research question
- Your tentative thesis
- “What, if any, prior beliefs, assumptions, preconceptions, ideas, or prejudices do you bring to this project? What personal experiences may have shaped the way you feel? Before you began developing working knowledge on the topic, what were you thinking about it? What are you thinking about it now?” (Ballenger 46).(Keep in mind that in order to fully answer question #3, you must have first developed some working knowledge on your topic.)
Example:NameProfessor DunnENC1102DateSTEM Worker Shortage: Are Colleges Doing Their Part? Many colleges are teaching introductory freshman-level science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) classes that are not conducive to student success and retention. In fact, unprepared freshman students are discouraged, drop classes, change majors, and sometimes drop out of college altogether. I became curious about freshman failure rates after ending up in an introductory college physics class with 400 other students. On the first test, only 82 of 400 students passed.
It did not seem possible that a career I had hoped for and worked towards would be doomed by a disengaged professor with no intent of teaching the subject at hand. Material on the test was not the material taught in class.
- Research QuestionsI became interested in researching the topic because I asked myself was this happening at other schools? Was the format for learning, large lectures, the most effective way to teach? Did the size of the class impact student success? How are other schools handling issues of STEM student’s retention. Finally, is there a better way to teach students at the college level, which would encourage a student’s success rather than foster discouragement and student failures?
- Thesis College freshman are failing introductory courses due to the large class sizes, failure of teachers to use progressive teaching methods, and an antiquated weed-out mentality leading to low numbers of STEM graduates and a lower than necessary number of future STEM workers. Colleges need to decrease STEM class sizes and integrate active learning methodologies in STEM courses to increase student retention and success.
- Prejudices and FeelingsThe research needs to be objective, since prior prejudices exist. When I began the research, I was angry, and after further research it makes me angrier to know there is a different way to teach and other schools have taken an active interest into employing different methods. At the same time, the research helps me understand I was a victim of a flawed “Teach as it has always been taught” system.
There is a better way. Change needs to be made, and unfortunately change is difficult, time-consuming, and costly. I feel this paper will help me as well as any others, who have encountered nearly impossible classes, to find peace in their failure. Research into a college’s teaching methods would be beneficial to all prospective STEM students.
