You are required to undertake a stress analysis of a compressor disc in the compressor stage of
an experimental gas turbine. In this particular design the compressor stage consists of a number of
discs which are held together by retaining bolts which are in turn fixed to end housings which are
held in bearings. This is shown in simplified form in figure 2.

In disc design, certain criteria have been followed by manufacturers to ensure the disc meets
stringent safety requirements. Stress levels within specific areas of the disc are paramount to its
expected life span. The important stresses are:
1) Maximum tangential (hoop) stress at bore
2) Mean tangential (hoop) stress
3) Maximum radial stress
