Extra Credit: You can earn extra credit by reading, summarizing, and responding to a newspaper of magazine article on any environmental topic. The article must be at least 20 column inches long and from The Seattle Times, The New York Times, or an approved journal or magazine.
The criteria for the Summary are that it should be one to two paragraphs long, clear, concise, accurate, and complete. The reader should be able to read your Summary and not need to read the original article. It should be written in your own words and not be a series of excerpts from the original. Criteria for the Response are that it should be two to three paragraphs long, clear, accurate, complete, thoughtful, and insightful.

A copy of the original article must be attached to the S/R. The points from the Summary/Response (up to 10 points each for a maximum of up to 20 points, meaning you can do two S/R’s) will be added to your exam grades.
A model Summary/Response will be provided upon request. Any S/R must be turned in before the end of the 9th week of the quarter.

Your letters should be factual and informational and could express your opinion, as long as you do so respectfully and with concrete support. They must be well-written and at least one page long.
You can earn up to 5 points for each letter, for a maximum of up to 15 points, meaning you can do as many as three letters, which will be added to your exam grades. If your letter to the editor is printed by either The Seattle Times or The New York Times, you will receive an extra 5 points. A copy of any letter must be turned in before the end of the 9th week.
