Patricia Benner introduced the concept of expert nurses developing their skills from and educational base and experience. As a nurse travels through and between the levels of nursing experience; novice, advanced beginner, competent, proficient, and expert; intuition is noted to become a vital part of the nurse’s skill set.

Evidence based practice identifies the gap between what we know and what we do in the care of patients and is intended to standardize healthcare practices and to reduce illogical variation in care (Stevens, 2013). At the lower levels of experience, maintaining a standardization of care will help to produce improved outcomes. According to Stevens, “evidence based practice unifies research evidence with clinical expertise and encourages individualization of care through inclusion of patient preferences” (2013, para 7). As nurses increase in their level of experience, intuition and confidence become crucial parts of care; their knowledge and experience can present opportunities to identify additional needs for standardization to decrease unpredictable patient outcomes.

If I were faced with the task of applying a theoretical model to my person nursing practice setting, it would have to be that of one of the most respected figures of nursing, Florence Nightingale. Florence Nightingale worked throughout her entire nursing career basing her practice on her belief in the influence of the h environment on patient outcome. When working I would do my best to maintain my work space and the living space of my patients to the same standard that I hold the actual care that I administer. As stated by Zborowsky, “In addition to writing about sanitation, infection rates, and ventilation, Nightingale understood that environmental aspects such as color, noise, and light, along with the nurse’s presence, significantly contributed to health outcomes” (2014). Florence Nightingale’s theory does well to tie into the concept of evidence-based practice in that it is a fact that if the environment within a health care setting does not meet certain standards, the physical outcomes of a patient’s condition will reflect it. If sanitation standards are not enforced and the environment that patients are exposed to is below adequacy, patients will be at risk and most likely develop infections. The concept of practice-based evidence plays a big role in this.

Theory is an aspect of theoretical framework that depicts reality of the phenomenon of nursing practice. Theory represents a concept of interrelated events that describe how we practice nursing. Nursing education on the BSN level theory depicts how institutions of higher learning and facilitators approach instructional materials, class lectures, and clinical. Theory can best be depicted in the clinical settings when students are able to get hands-on practice relating class room lecture, text book readings into actual care for the patient population. Although most models are related to the mission statements of schools of nursing, few seem to be based on a distinct philosophy of practice. By applying the philosophical underpinnings and assumptions of practice that are guided by critical theory, educators may begin to better identify the values of academic nursing practice and incorporate this activity more fully into the education environment (Swartz, 2014).
