Johnson makes the claim that patterns of oppression and privilege are rooted in systems that we all participate in and make happen. Those patterns are built into paths of least resistance that people feel drawn to follow every day, regardless of whether they think about where they lead or the consequences they produce.1 Johnson’s critique extends beyond how we as individuals act toward one another; he sees these patterns functioning at the global level as well (note his comment about his wardrobe on page 88). As Christians who are called to love our neighbors (and not just our geographical ones as exemplified by the �Good� Samaritan), we need to think about how our lifestyle patterns oppress others outside of our nation. For example, the simple act of buying a new skillet or a moves pollution, chemical waste, and responsible labor practices outside the realm of the United States�s jurisdiction (allowing us to believe that, �If �they� don�t like it, �they� should do something about it! After all, �I�m not the one doing this to them. It�s their government or corporations that are permitting and perpetrating these acts.��)
