One of the unfortunate aspects of modern historical writing in the United States, from my point of view, is that it is authored by academic historians who seek to underplay the role of the
individual in history, in favor of broad social and economic movements. Partially this can be blamed on earlier generations of historians who created “great men”
history, that is, overemphasis on powerful men (and few if any women). Also, there is class bias involved, as most academic historians come from a middle class background, and thus are not
all that crazy about emphasizing the role of the wealthy elites in our society. Such biases are often evident in US history textbooks.
The problem with this latter emphasis is that we DO have wealthy elites who have a tremendous influence on how and to what effect this country is governed and/or ruled, in the government or through major businesses.
For better or worse, the two Dulles brothers reflect the influence of an older WASP elite from
the northeastern states, especially New York and the New England states, on the history of the
United States. (WASP = White Anglo Saxon Protestant). The author of this study of the Dulles
brothers, Stephen Kinzer, has a definite POV. As a journalist most of his work has been quite
critical of US foreign policy in the world. While reading this study, I urge you to watch several of
the video presentations by Mr. Kinzer. I have assigned this book because, even with the
author’s prejudices (which are unavoidable with any author), this is a very good history of two
men and the times in which they lived, and on which they had a tremendous influence.
