Participation in numerous sporting activities are common in developing injuries of which can be catergorised as being minor or major dependant upon their severity and level of treatment required. Minor Injuries Minor injuries are those which are sustained during physical activity that cause minimum implications to the participant and can usually be treated by the natural healing process of the body, however professional medical treatment may still be necessary.
Despite minor injuries not really affecting factors such as movement or severe distress they still need to be treated in an appropriate manner to prevent any further implications from developing. Some common examples of minor injuries are cuts and bruises which are highly common in physical contact sports such as football and rugby.
Cuts: Sustaining a cut from sporting participation is the more common of all injuries both in due to the skin of an individual being very fragile and easily penetrated by sharp objects. Very small and minor cuts will not penetrate through the surface of the skin and will heal effectively over a short period of time unless infection occurs.
Infection however is likely in deeper cuts that do penetrate the surface of the skin which can cause many issues therefore it is important that major cuts are treated immediately. A deeper cut can potentially damage important structures lying beneath the surface of the skin including blood vessels, nerves and attaching tendons.
A cut will usually occur when a sharp object comes into contact with the skin and breaks away layers of skin cells leading to a possible expel of blood. An example of this in sport could be during a ruck in rugby where the stood on a boot of an opposing player could accidentally catch the skin on the player on the floor causing a cut to occur. As mentioned previously infection is highly unlikely with minor cuts as they will usually scab over and heal. On the other hand if infection does occur it is imperative the effected area is washed out thoroughly and covered up appropriately to prevent further damage to skin cells or blood vess…………………………
