1. Why do so few of the male-female love connections in Le Morte D’Arthur occur between married people, and so many occur between a bachelor and a woman who’s already married? Does Le Morte D’Arthur have something against marriage?

As a matter of fact, this book is not against marriage but contributes to the idea of a chivalry in the traditional way. One of the most important features of a knight was love to a rich powerful woman, and it was rather important for her to be untouchable. Even more, in literature, it quite often happened that the knight could never talk to his beloved one during his whole life, but the sense of his love gave him inspiration to act as a knight which only develops his self-sacrificing attitude. This also was a symbol of conflict between a landlord, or a king, and a knight.

2. Which character in the Morte D’Arthur do you most admire and why? Are there any characters that you admire?

Personally, Merlin is my favorite character because he is a symbol of wisdom, understanding, and patience. His behavior is attractive for he knows the future yet does not make any effort to change it, and such perception is a noble one. He is a wise manipulator who has more power than any king could ever possess. However, his emotional and psychological weakness as a human being attracts the reader because he makes him closer to the character who deserves admiration and respect. Despite this, Merlin sometimes is shown as a person who does not clearly understand that Arthur as the person who receives his advices may not understand him completely and, therefore, deal with his emotions. As a consequence, this proves that Merlin is an idealized character.

3. What is your favorite popular adaptation of Le Morte D’Arthur or the Arthur story in general? How does it compare to the book?

One of the best adaptations of Le Morte D’Arthur is Merlin (2008-2012) which depicts a young Merlin and his growing maturity he accumulates during his cooperation with Arthur. Despite the fact that in the majority of stories both Arthur and Merlin are described as the old or adult people, the series depict them as usual people who possess both negative and positive features of character and who still must obtain the skills and
