The competition between both LTE and WIMAX is unique in a sense that they are not totally different systems like in the case of 2G (GSM & CDMA), rather some experts say it is a rivalry between siblings.

The 4G Technologies aim to provide a packet switching based solution for the modern communication needs such as voice, broadband internet and multimedia streaming. IMT (4G) ADVANCED STANDARD

International Telecommunication Union’s Standardization Sector (ITU-T) is responsible for standardizing 4G technologies. There are currently two major technologies that are competing to be chosen as IMT Advanced Technology.

Long Term Evolution (LTE)

IEEE 802.16 (WIMAX)

Currently as per market trends LTE standards are expected to be taken as standards for 4G Mobile Phone Systems. WIMAX has an advantage that it is already deployed in many countries while LTE based systems are not expected to be launched before 2012. But still some key market players like Alcatel Lucent and Ericson are still backing LTE to be selected as IMT Advanced Technology.
