There Are 3 plays that have to be watched and then responded to, 750-1000 words for each play.
For EACH of the three productions you view you will respond by discussing the 5 following topics below. Your response need not come in the form of a “paper” but you should respond to each topic individually. 2 to 3 well-thought out paragraphs will do for each topic. I am not looking for right or wrong answers I am looking for how well you support your thoughts. Don’t just tell me what you think but why you think it. Make sure you use SPECIFIC examples from the productions.
As TOPICS:
1.Often in a story the main character is referred to as the PROTAGONIST. For this response we want to define the Protagonist as the character that goes through the most significant change. As you have read in “The Theatre Experience” characters have an objective, motive or intention. It is the conflict the character goes through in trying to achieve their objective that provides a majority of the storyline. In many plays a number of characters will go through some sort of change, be it physical, emotional, religious, psychological or combination thereof. It is up to you to decide who the protagonist is, who is it that goes through the MOST SIGNIFICANT change and why do you think that. After identifying the protagonist discuss the following… What is their ultimate goal (objective)? how do they go about achieving that goal (tactics), and do they achieve it? What are the major conflicts/obstacles for them trying to achieve their goal? Give examples from the production (dialog or actions) that support your ideas.

2. At the heart of all storytelling is conflict, without conflict there is no growth or change. There are 3 basic forms of conflict in all stories, these forms are Man vs. MAN (me versus you) Man vs Self (you versus you own fears, desires, beliefs, etc.) and Man vs Nature (you versus whatever environment you find yourself in). You need to decide which form of conflict is present in each production as it pertains to the Protagonist you identified. Once you understand which form of conflict is present, for this topic, you need to identify the ANTAGONIST. Often the Antagonist is understood to be the “bad” guy, but for our purposes we want to define the ANTAGONIST as the character MOST RESPONSIBLE for the change in the Protagonist, this can sometimes be a loved one or an “enemy”. You should be able to see why understanding the forms of conflict is important in identifying the Antagonist. If the conflict is Man vs. Self then the Protagonist and Antagonist is the same character, with Man vs Man they are two different characters and so on. So, which character can be identified as the Antagonist and why? What is their ultimate goal, how do they go about achieving that goal, and do they achieve it? Give examples form the production (dialog or actions) that supports your ideas.

5. As audience members we each relate to different aspects of a production on a personal level. We might not relate to the specific actions of the plot never having been in that specific situation, but maybe they resemble something similar that happen in our own lives. In a story a character might commit suicide or parents might fight. Maybe your parents fought, not about the same things as characters in the production, but it reminds you of that situation in your own life. It maybe you do not relate at all to the protagonist or antagonist and their struggles but maybe there is a character that reminds you of a quirky neighbor or friend that you had. In other words you do not have to imagine yourself in the specific instances of the story to relate to the production as a whole. With that in mind, how do you connect with or relate to any part of this production? Whether it be a certain character, situation or theme present in the production. Please provide anecdotal evidence of how you see this production being relevant to you in either a personal, civic, or social manner.
